The coins of Queen Elizabeth II…

The Australian coins struck from 1953 to 1964 represent the very first coinage types issued during the record-breaking reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Importantly, these coins also represent the very last types issued as part of Australia’s first national currency system.
Designed by George Kruger Gray, the florin carries the Coat of Arms, the shilling depicts a ram’s head and the threepence bears the ‘sheaf of wheat’ design. Designed by William Blakemore, the sixpence features the same motif employed during the reigns of King George V and King George VI. The Elizabeth II halfpenny and penny are both distinguished by the impressive ‘bounding kangaroo’ design, created by George Kruger Gray. The obverse of each coin struck from 1953 to 1964 features the Royal Titles and Mary Gillick’s youthful portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Metallic composition: the threepence, sixpence, shilling and florin coins were struck from silver (50% silver, 40% copper, 5% zinc & 5% nickel), with the halfpenny and penny comprising 97% copper, 2.5% zinc & 0.5% tin.
