It was all but impossible to determine the relative worth of this wild mix of currency, until Governor Philip Gidley King issued the Proclamation of 1800, assigning fixed values to the main coins then in use.

Struck to the Perth Mint’s world-renowned Proof standard, each coin bears an accurate recreation of the famous Spanish Silver ‘Pillar’ Dollar. Famous as the origin for the $ sign, inspired by the S-shaped configuration of the banners around the Pillars of Hercules, the Spanish Silver Dollar was one of the world’s most trusted trade coins. Also known as a ‘Piece of 8’, the coin naturally made its way to the shores of Britain’s new southern colony, and was listed in Governor King’s Proclamation of 1800 at a value of five shillings.
